There's a kitchen table, a worn-out notebook, roots and resins that smell like something died in the dirt, and a practitioner who's been doing this since before TikTok existed as a concept.

That practitioner is me. Thirty-six years. Four lineages. Thousands of workings. And a very specific opinion about what's happening in the online folk magic market right now.

The Performance Economy

Folk magic went viral, and it took about eighteen months to become completely unrecognizable.

What you're seeing on Etsy and TikTok is the performance of authentic spellwork — not the thing itself. Jar spells with color-coordinated ingredients and Canva labels. "Custom hexes" from someone who learned their craft last spring. $30 intentions wrapped in gorgeous packaging shipped from a fulfillment center in Ohio.

None of this is folk magic. It's folk magic aesthetics layered over nothing. And people are paying real money for it, then wondering why their situation hasn't changed.

The tell is always the same: no lineage, no specificity, no accountability. Real folk magic practice is rooted in tradition — you can trace where the practitioner learned, from whom, through what line. Authentic spellwork is built around your specific situation, not a template tweaked with your name. And any practitioner worth their salt stands behind the work: if it doesn't produce, there's a conversation to have.

What Authentic Spellwork Actually Requires

I'm Southern chaos-folk by practice, with Celtic and Norse bloodlines and Taíno and Santa Muerte initiations behind me. When I take on a working, this is what actually happens:

The intake is long and specific. I need to understand the situation in detail — not "I want my ex back" but who they are, what the relationship was, what happened, what you want the outcome to look like in six months. Folk magic is intervention in a living situation. Without detail, I'm guessing. Practitioners who don't ask questions are doing template work.

The materials are sourced for your case. Real folk magic tradition requires specific correspondences — and those correspondences change based on the work. A working for reconciliation uses different roots, resins, and timing than a working for protection or prosperity. I'm not pulling from a pre-made kit. I'm sourcing from suppliers I've worked with for years, sometimes driving to pick things up, sometimes waiting for the right phase to source certain materials correctly.

The working is documented. Every step. Photos, notes on timing, what was used and why, what was observed during the working itself. This documentation gets delivered to the client. Not because it's good customer service — because it's part of the tradition. You have a right to know exactly what was done in your name.

There's an outcome window and real accountability. I don't do vague. We agree upfront on what the outcome looks like and when we should see movement. If we don't see it, I want to know — because either something about my read was off, or something in the situation shifted, or the working needs additional layers. When someone wants to reconcile with an estranged family member, the working supports the conversation they need to have, not replaces it.

The fantasy version — the $30 Etsy hex that "ships in 3-5 business days" — promises to shortcut the work. And people buy it because they're desperate and the packaging is compelling and the reviews are full of enthusiastic vagueness.

Real folk magic practitioners aren't promising shortcuts. We're offering to add force to a situation you're already actively working. There's a difference between those two things, and it matters in the outcome.
